Classes
Medicinal Plant Walk and Identification
Angela Wyant of the Abundant Forest will lead the group on a nature walk up the local Cow Creek trail. Angela will demonstrate ways to identify and ethnically harvest plants we find on the trail. She’ll also explain medicinal properties, preparations, and uses for the selected plants.
Autumn plants we commonly harvest or see along the trail include Usnea, Sweet Cicely, Turkey Tail mushrooms, Fir Needles, Red-belted Polypores, Lomatium, Arrowleaf Balsam Root, Cleavers, Yarrow, and Nettles.
Medicinal Plant Tincturing
Tinctures are preparations made with food-grade alcohol to extract the medicinal constituents of a plant. Angela will help you start several preparations to take home and source your own medicinal usage. Inexpensive Vodka and canning jars will be available for purchase at the event, and we encourage you to bring your own. We recommend a variety of sizes of clean glass jars.
Making Black Salve
Angela’s signature E-Z to BEE Salve-E class will feature Black Salve this weekend, not so E-Z, but very important for Cancer Treatment. Black Salve is an important staple in any medicine cabinet for treating topical skin cancer.
Dutch Oven Cooking
For many years, Jessie Kersey Chastain has made food on camping trips in “the Dutch Oven Way.” The class will prepare Dutch oven meals for Saturday night’s dinner, including a main dish and dessert. You’ll also receive Jessie’s recipe book and instructions for seasoning and caring for your Dutch Ovens.
Composting
In this class Jessie will teach you the basic ingredients to start your compost pile and keep it healthy. Dirt is not all the same. Class includes a starter booklet.
All About Cattails
Mike Tari will discuss and demonstrate the many uses of cattails, which are often referred to as the “Supermarket of the Swamp.” Cattails can be used for food, medicine, fire starting, clothing, mats, and a host of other uses. To learn how to work with Cattails, we will use the leaves of cattails to make a doll.
Understanding Inflammation and the Root Cause of Disease
Much of disease is caused by lifestyle. If we can lifestyle our way into it, we can certainly lifestyle our way out of it. At the root of many diseases, inflammation is the cause. Learn from Leah Zoellner what causes inflammation, how to prevent it, and how to manage it to reverse illness. Lectures and handouts will give you the tools to take charge of your own health.
Making Kombucha
In Leah’s pursuit of health, she discovered Kombucha and the many health benefits it offers. Learn about this healthy fermented beverage and how to make it. Leah will provide a lecture, demonstration, and supplies to get you started making your own Kombucha.
