Classes

Medicinal Plant Walk and Identification

Angela Wyant of the Abundant Forest will lead the group on a nature walk up the local Cow Creek trail. Angela will demonstrate ways to identify and ethnically harvest plants we find on the trail. She’ll also explain medicinal properties, preparations, and uses for the selected plants.

Autumn plants we commonly harvest or see along the trail include Usnea, Sweet Cicely, Turkey Tail mushrooms, Fir Needles, Red-belted Polypores, Lomatium, Arrowleaf Balsam Root, Cleavers, Yarrow, and Nettles.

Medicinal Plant Tincturing

Tinctures are preparations made with food-grade alcohol to extract the medicinal constituents of a plant. Angela will help you start several preparations to take home and source your own medicinal usage. Inexpensive Vodka and canning jars will be available for purchase at the event, and we encourage you to bring your own. We recommend a variety of sizes of clean glass jars.

Making Black Salve

Angela’s signature E-Z to BEE Salve-E class will feature Black Salve this weekend, not so E-Z, but very important for Cancer Treatment. Black Salve is an important staple in any medicine cabinet for treating topical skin cancer.

Dutch Oven Cooking

For many years, Jessie Kersey Chastain has made food on camping trips in “the Dutch Oven Way.” The class will prepare Dutch oven meals for Saturday night’s dinner, including a main dish and dessert. You’ll also receive Jessie’s recipe book and instructions for seasoning and caring for your Dutch Ovens.

Composting

In this class Jessie will teach you the basic ingredients to start your compost pile and keep it healthy. Dirt is not all the same. Class includes a starter booklet.

All About Cattails

Mike Tari will discuss and demonstrate the many uses of cattails, which are often referred to as the “Supermarket of the Swamp.” Cattails can be used for food, medicine, fire starting, clothing, mats, and a host of other uses. To learn how to work with Cattails, we will use the leaves of cattails to make a doll.

Understanding Inflammation and the Root Cause of Disease

Much of disease is caused by lifestyle. If we can lifestyle our way into it, we can certainly lifestyle our way out of it. At the root of many diseases, inflammation is the cause. Learn from Leah Zoellner what causes inflammation, how to prevent it, and how to manage it to reverse illness. Lectures and handouts will give you the tools to take charge of your own health.

Making Kombucha

In Leah’s pursuit of health, she discovered Kombucha and the many health benefits it offers. Learn about this healthy fermented beverage and how to make it. Leah will provide a lecture, demonstration, and supplies to get you started making your own Kombucha.

About your Herbalist Team

Angela Wyant is a Senior Apprentice, having worked with herbalist Darcy Williamson for 14 years. She owns the herbal product line Abundant Forest and has taught numerous classes and led many forest walks. These are highlighted with Angela’s passion, knowledge, and attention to detail and beauty.

Jessie Kersey Chastain is a native of Idaho and a Master Gardener. She is active with the Extension office in Boise and Snohomish County, Washington, where the original classes began. She has learned Master Gardening in both states because of the different climates and soils in each region. It is always a treat to learn from Jessie when she teaches at the Haven.

For most of his life, Mike Tari has had a passion for the natural environment and learning Traditional and Ancestral Skills. This passion was deepened and enriched when he lived with the Yakama Indians for over 30 years, where he was allowed to share in their traditions and cultural practices. Mike has been teaching Traditional and Ancestral Skills at various gatherings around the Northwest since 1989. Most notably is the Rabbit Stick Traditional Skills Gathering in Rexburg Idaho, the largest and oldest Traditional Skills gathering in the world.

Leah Zoellner is a Registered Nurse who has a passion for understanding the root cause of disease and reversing it through lifestyle and natural solutions. We are excited to have Leah’s expertise and professionalism at her first event teaching at the Haven.
